A Dubai desert safari from Abu Dhabi is a full afternoon and evening out; the drive to the red dunes is about two hours each way.
Because of the distance, Abu Dhabi pickups are private (your own vehicle and driver) and carry a surcharge that is shown on the tour page and again before you pay. Pickup is around 1 pm and you are back in Abu Dhabi close to midnight.
Families with young children often prefer the private safari so the timing can be adjusted.
